Hey all, Looking for some feedback regarding gearing in my 97 TJ. Right now I am running 33's with a 4 inch lift and 3:07 gears. I am finding that the jeep bogs down in first and does not have any high end power. I am wondering if making a change to either 3:73 or 4:10 gears would make a difference. Any feedback is appreciated.

Don't bother with the 3.73, yes it will bring your rpm back where it was when you had small tires but you have to think about the unsprung weight (weight of the 33'' and wheels) that you added and now need to turn...
With 4.10 you would be going 60mph at 2000rpm, wich is pretty good. A stock TJ with a AX-15, 3.07 and 28'' tires will do 60mph at around 1775rpm... So 4.10 is pretty much the best option. If you ever plan on going up to 35'', just spend the money once and go 4.56. The rpm will be a bit on the high side with the 33'' but if you don't do much highway you should be good.
Don't forget that you will need new carrier's in both axle (assuming you have the dana 30/35 combo) because of the carrier break.

very good advice! you can ussually find used 4.10 for a jeep for a good price, remember that the tj dana 30 are low pinion and that yj gear will not fit in the front, if you have the money i would go with the 4.56, if you use it for mostly trail go with the 4.88, remember to get a master install kit for both axle ,it make the job so much easier, and do get someone who know's how to set them and can garantie his work to do it ,setting gears is a tedious process and needs lots of patience and trial and error, in bathurst i only know of 4 mechanics who do it properly

Hey Copper,i have an 03 tj 4 inch lift with 33's and mine is a automatic with 3.73 gears .I have no problem with power or anything like that but a set of 4.10 would be better .4.56's would be better with 35's.I had found a gearing chart in a jp magazine and they recommended if you have overdrive or a 5 or 6 speed standard the 4.10's would be good for 33's.My brother has a 97 tj 5 speed with 35's and 4.88 gears, and at 100klms he revs a little but is never short for power.Hope this helps

Again guys thanks for all the feedback. Nice to see you can still get reliable advice from your local community... Butterball, you finally got your 33's... Maybe now i'll see you offroad hehehe.
See y'all on the trail!
PS I made my decision thanks to the feedback and will be going with the 410 gears once the boss gives me the pocketbook clearance. hehehe. Anyone out there have a spare set hanging around that will fit I will probably take them off your hands.
