the stock 30 spline shaft in my dana 61 where a bit smallish for my 42, and i was concerned about breaking them every time i went wheeling, my welded spider gear where a bit hard on the tire too , so to fix those two issue i ordered a set of yukon 4340 alloys 35 spline shaft and the matching lockrigth locker, i was sure the dana 61 would allow the 35 spline shaft rigth in the housing, but it wasn the case , the shaft where too big for the housing and i had to take the housing off the jeep, gut it then get a machine shop to bore out the bearing spindle to 1 9/16 of an inch, here are the pics, this project is not all done but well under way
first i removed the rear axle from under the jeep with randy help(thank randy) this axle is pretty heavy
then we gutted it and got it ready to be sent to the machine shop to be bored out, it was sent with one of the new shaft for testing purpose
while the axle was gone i check my gear and bearing, they are ok, then found out one of my adjusting cable for the brake was gone so i replaced it , then i took the ring gear off and removed the welded spider gear, then i got the lock rigth in place and shimmed properly
then here is the housing back from the machine shop with a minimum of steel bored out of the spindle to accomodate the new 35 spline shaft, i started putting the gear back in but i had to find a new pinion nut as mine was getting a bit tired
will work more on it tomorow, not bad hey i'll have some shaft in there 40 % stronger then a dana 70 shaft , and my locker will actually unload when i turn
more to come
